Bob’s Misadventure

I made this in for 3D Animation Independent Study. For this animation, I wanted to work on rigging characters and making controls for the character's animation. I wanted this animation to be more emotional than my other one. I did a week of storyboarding and made some of the illustrations, like the poster. I used some of the models in Cinema 4D, but there were some objects that I had to make on my own. I edited the final product in Adobe After Effects and added all the voice audio and music.

My overall thoughts about this project are that this is a good representation of my skills as an Animator/Storyteller. This was the last animation I did for one of my classes, and after finishing it, I could see all the progress I had made since I first started animating. I am proud of myself for conveying the character's feelings just from the eyes and tone of his voice. I love making animations and will continue improving my skills for each of my future animations.

Process

First Draft

I started making a storyboard to figure out what kind of story I wanted to tell and what I needed to model for each scene. I wanted this animation to be more emotional because I make a lot of animations that are more humorous and funny. I wanted to make a compelling story that had a message that also was comedic at times.

Modeling

When modeling Bob, I had to make different controllers for all the various parts of the character. I had one to control his eyes and body. Since he didn’t have a mouth, I needed his eyes and body to show the audience his feelings in each scene. I then modeled all the backgrounds I needed for each of the scenes. I made the hallway and living room models because I wanted the audience to see the hallway from Bob’s perspective, hinting at his future misbehaviors. I used some models from Cinema 4D’s model library. I modeled Bob, the plunger, and the poster on the wall. I designed the poster in Illustrator, which was meant to be an inspirational message to Bob. When it came to the bathroom, I was going to have a wider shot that showed the sink as well, but decided I should’’t pull away focus from Bob and the toilet.
